“Doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.”

This is perhaps the simplest definition of discipline, but it’s often not a simple thing to do. (We’re talking self control, not discipline for children.) Until recently, I considered discipline to be a “dirty” word. People who followed a routine, stuck to the basics, put one foot in front of the other, seemed, well, boring. These are the Ned Flanders of the world. Always neat and tidy, never disorganized, often cheery. And that’s the thing. The most disciplined people I know seem…happy. They may lead super busy lives, just like the rest of us, but they seem calm. They rarely lose their keys and …

My friends Nikki, Tracee and I enjoy the view and beverages at Grace Hill Winery in Whitewater, Kansas.

When my friends and I showed up at Grace Hill Winery in Whitewater, Kansas, I think the staff thought we’d been drinking already. Nope. We were all just giddy to be released from the truck we’d been squished in for an hour. And, we’re just generally goofy people. We were there to celebrate my friend Tracee’s 30th birthday, and I’m so glad I got to be a part of her special day. From the moment we walked in to the tasting room, I was instantly impressed. The staff was warm and friendly, and rolled right along with our group’s crazy antics (which only increased as we got further into the tasting).

I’d never been to a …

Big sister couldn’t wait to meet little sister, and just loved blowing raspberries on mommy’s big belly. (Photo courtesy clgphotography.net)

I have a 3 and 1 year old. I get little sleep every night. My house is usually in complete chaos, overrun by toys, clothes, and more toys. Silence is a thing of the past, a treasure I savor whenever I get a few glorious minutes. But there are moments, crazy-in-the-head moments, when I long to be pregnant again. Is it the cute newborn pics my friends keep posting to Facebook? No. Those kids are cute but not that cute. Is it the pretty preggo belly shots my friends are taking? No. They look cute with a swollen frame, but I didn’t look that cute preggers. Is it the love I feel for my two …

An entire night of sleep for Christmas? Sounds purrrrfect. (image from wallsa.com)

Every body Pauses and stares at me
These two baggy eyes are plain to see
I know just who to blame for this catastrophe!
But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be!

All I want for Christmas
is a good night’s sleep,
a good night’s sleep,
yes, a good night’s sleep!

Gee, if I could only
get a good night’s sleep,
then I could wish you
“Merry Christmas.”

It seems so long since I could say,
“Wow I feel so well rested!”
Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be,
if in earplugs I invested!

All I want for Christmas
is a good night’s sleep,
a good night’s sleep,
yes, a good night’s …

Employers: do you really want drool on that paperwork? No? Then create a nap room. (image from: http://www.telegraph.co.uk)

I can’t remember the last time I got a solid night’s sleep. And by solid, I mean six hours, uninterrupted. Anything more is just extravagance. Even when we’ve shipped the kids off to the grandparent’s for a night, or when we escaped for a weekend (whee), I still woke up. It might take an entire bottle of wine, or some super powerful sleeping pills to knock me out. Still, I know I get more sleep now than when I was working full time. No, SAHMs don’t get to take luxurious naps during the day (unless their kids are in school), but I do get to sleep in a little bit later, and work stress doesn’t keep me up at …

Now that I’m finally settled into my SAHM/WAHM role, I sometimes find myself longing for the workplace, but not for the reasons you might expect. Sure, my (adorable, precious) children drive me bonkers sometimes, and a little more (or a lot more) dough would be nice in our bank account, but these aren’t the things I long for the most. So what could possibly have me longing for the 8-5 more than sanity and a paycheck?

1. Work friends.  I’m blessed to enjoy some incredible friendships outside of the workplace. But there’s just something different, something special, about work friends. You  share so many inside jokes, that with just a look, you can send each other into hysterics. You share the same goals, projects and often the same aggravations. You have lunch, coffee …
