2013: The Year I Ate My Way Through a Blizzard
They say this year was one for the record books. Our neck of the woods got 12+ inches of snow in two days, the second highest amount in recent record keeping. I can remember one other time, from deep in my childhood, when we got a comparable amount.
Now that I have my own children, my own home, I finally understand how it is that adults used to rattle off the years that certain weather events happened. Like the old men sitting around at the gas station, talking about the frog choker back in ought-six, or something like that. I will always remember 2013 as the year of the blizzard. The real deal. But the snow isn’t the only thing that left an impression. It was the food, glorious food! Thanks to my husband’s suggestion, I stocked the kitchen the day before the storm hit, and we’ve been reaping the benefits during these past two days stuck at home.
Homemade whole wheat pancakes, chicken/broccoli/cheese quesadillas, venison chili and cornbread, chocolate chip blondies, bacon and scrambled eggs, caramel apples, shrimp and pineapple fried rice, and finally homemade pound cake with strawberries and whipped cream. Of course, I didn’t take any pictures of this feasts, only of my beautiful family enjoying this rare amount of snowfall. These past two days have been perfect. Sure, hubby and I were getting a little twitchy-eyed with each other by this morning, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
………………………
And in case you’re interested, here are some of the recipes I tried. I highly recommend both!
My goodness that pound cake is making me salivate. I haven’t had breakfast; this wasn’t the right thing to read. And I agree: snow is fun to look at and be on top of, but once it’s in your face, down inside your scarf? FUN OVER, LET’S GO INSIDE.
Oh my. That pound cake was. So. Good.
Now I am hungry…..
I’m coming to your house the next time there is a major snowfall! Way to be prepared.
Ha! I didn’t do as much cooking during round 2. No power!
Trapped indoors…the perfect time to cook.
You know it!
