Warren Theatres Makes the Right Move for Special Needs Children

The first time I took my preschooler to a movie at the theater, it wasn’t exactly relaxing. I mean, she was being a typical three year old, fidgeting in her seat, making a few loud noises, and just generally having a bit of trouble focusing the whole time. Still, it was worth it. Besides, I know she’ll outgrow these behaviors as she gets older. And everyone seems to understand when a small child behaves this way.

But what if your child always struggles with behaving in a movie theater, or anywhere for that matter? What if your child has special needs? Does this mean your family isn’t able to enjoy the magic of the movie theater? Must your child be kept from enjoying the same feature films their normal ability siblings are? Not anymore. At least not in the Wichita, Kansas area. I received this note from a friend of the Mom on the Range Facebook Page today, and I just couldn’t keep the news to myself.

KUDOS to the Warren Theatres for doing the right thing!

Just wanted to pass on some good news regarding the Warren Theatres. A fellow citizen had the opportunity to visit with the VP of the Warren two weeks ago and discuss the challenges that many parents/guardians face when taking their child who is autistic/sensory disorders to a movie. For the most part many children with autism/sensory disorders do not have the opportunity to experience movies on the big screen. To meet this need the Warren Theatres have decided to offer a once-a-month 11 a.m., Saturday morning showing of a new release family friendly movie. The first one will be on Nov. 17th at the Warren West Theatre. Movie will be “Wreck It Ralph” and show time will be 11 a.m. The lights will be turned up a little more and the sound level a little less. Ticket prices will be $7. The movie will be a time where the kids can stand up, talk, dance, etc. just basically enjoy the movie without fear of disturbing other movie goers. The only way this will continue is if they sell tickets. Please encourage anyone you know that may have a child(ren) who will enjoy taking advantage of this opportunity. The December movie showing will be Rise of the Guardians. Next time you go to a movie be sure and tell the Warren Theatre staff how much it is appreciated that they are offering this to the community.

These brothers can now enjoy a movie together, the way it should be.

My dear friend Gretchen, who has triplet boys (God bless her), one of whom has autism (God bless her again), had this to say about the Warren’s announcement:

“This is a BIG deal for many of our kiddos who are hyper-sensitive to all of the sensory input we get when we watch a movie on the big screen. Kansas City and other major markets have been doing this for years. I hope there are many who participate and appreciate the Warren for doing this. Families can finally have a fun movie experience without worrying about behaviors, sounds, standing, rocking, etc. To be FREE of that feeling that someone is judging you, or that your child is making the movie experience bad for others is huge. YAY Warren!”

So, KUDOS to the Warren Theatres for making the right move, and HOORAY for families who can enjoy this fun opportunity! Now, who wants some popcorn? 🙂

  1. My cousin has autistic twin boys and I was so excited when I heard about this. She loves the movies so maybe this will be something she can finally share with the boys.
